Galveston is a coastal resort city and port off the Southeast Texas coast on Galveston Island and Pelican Island in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the county seat of surrounding Galveston County and second-largest municipality in the county. It is also within the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area at its southern end on the northwestern coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 209.3 square miles (542.2 km²), of which 41.2 square miles (106.8 km²) are land and 168.1 square miles (435.4 km²), or 80.31%, are water.

Demographics

The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the city of Galveston had a population of 50,446 in 2019, a 5.7% increase from the 2010 census. At the census of 2010, there were 47,743 people, 19,943 households, and 10,779 families residing in the city. As of the 2016 U.S. Census estimated, the city had a total population of 50,550.
